Girl Scout Silver Award Project

Hello, my name is Seanna, I am 13 years old and this blog is part of my Girl Scout Silver Award, granted on October 5th. My silver award project was to inform fourth graders about the importance of mathematics. I provided a presentation to the fourth graders in my school about how math is all around us. We use math in music, science, writing, video games, art, to name a few. To support on my statement  and project, I visited the Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) in NYC and videotaped the exhibits. I created a Power Point presentation of my visit and research and presented this to the class. After the presentation we broke into groups and played fun math games. Some examples of the games are included in my blog and they are, Math Beach Ball, Math Relay, Power Tower, Straw Flute. At the end of the session the children said what their favorite game was Power Tower. The children went home with prizes and my presentation, included in this blog link, along with the math games and web links.

National Museum of Math

This is the National Math Museum. It is the only math museum in the United States of America. It is located in New York City and I highly recommend making a visit. The link to their website is in my references. Some of the exhibits are shown below.

Classroom Games

When I was in the classroom teaching the children why math was important, I set up games for the children to play. The games required the children to work in teams to solve mathematical problems, so I divided the children into four groups and they went around playing the games. Each game had it's own poster explaining the rules and the instructions of the game. The posters for the games are posted below.
